Heading Home to Heaven
By Kathleen Cooney, DVM Home To Heaven

You have loved your companion for years - the early morning walks, the trips to the grocery, the cuddling up on a cold night.  There felt a time when you would be together forever.  Now, you find yourself faced with their aging sweet face, their slower tender climb of the stairs, their waning appetite - and you worry,  is the time coming?  So many of us are faced with the decision, and none of us want to make it.  Will I know when the time comes?  Will I be able to help my dear friend when they need it the most?  How will I ever manage?  You are not alone.

Dr. Kathleen Cooney, owner of Home to Heaven, is here to support you and your beloved companion during those final days.  Her service is designed to talk families through the difficult decision to euthanize and offers support as the family begins the grieving process.  "The best way to prepare for your companions end-of-life care is to start talking to the family now", she says.  "Families often wait until an emergency occurs, when their animal is in great discomfort or pain, and are then forced to make hasty decisions.  Talking openly with everyone before that happens is so helpful and can offer great peace".

The time to euthanize is unique for every animal, depending on underlying disease, the desire to try therapies, longterm prognosis, etc.  Dr. Cooney recommends talking to your regular veterinarian about these issues before considering euthanasia.  If you do not have a veterinarian for your companion, she can advise you as well.

5 Fun Things to do with a Bones Du Jour Biscuit
1. Warm briefly in the microwave or oven when you are cooking for yourself. Your dog will think you slaved for hours to bake a fresh warm biscuit for him.

2. Put biscuits in a Kong toy and your dog will have fun getting them out and devouring them.

3. Take two small biscuits and make a peanut butter or liverwurst sandwich. These can be put in Kong toys too and are much less messy than trying to get peanut butter to the bottom of the toy.

4. Freeze biscuits or sandwiches (see number 3) and feed them straight from the freezer for a really cool treat in warm weather. It will be warm again, I promise!

5.If it is really hot out, freeze biscuits in ice cubes or take a food storage tub and fill it with biscuits, jerky, carrots and water to make a big ice block full of goodies. This is best served outside as it makes a mess when it melts.
